I See Jesus Everywhere!
Chapter in Construction, Please Check Back.
Did Jesus Really Ever Claim to Be God?
Over many years, I have studied this question in detail using scripture. The answer to this question is in the Scriptures. In my book, "I See Him! I See Him! God's WORD to Witness By!, I dedicated two chapters showing the comprehensive evidence that God is a Triune Being.
Many skeptics have so willingly challenged Christians by stating Jesus NEVER declared He was God or that He was Deity. I would dare say, most Christians are not up to the challenge of defending their faith and are ill prepared to give the reasons or answers for their belief that Jesus is God.
1 Peter 3:15
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
The Bible is like a fine tapestry. Interwoven throughout scripture are passages about God that must be reconciled with other verses in scripture. In doing so, the fine pattern of the Bible is revealed to us. From the very beginning, in the very first verse Genesis to the last book of Revelation...we can clearly see....God is revealing the TRUTH of who He is. When all scripture is reconciled and used together.....we can know.....Jesus is God.
In this chapter, I am narrowing it down to show the evidence using scripture that Jesus did declare and taught His disciples that He is indeed God. He did this throughout the New Testament. Some of His statements were obviously so, but other statements of His are not. I pray that this chapter will help us all be prepared to give the reason we believe that Jesus is God.
Did Jesus Really Declare Himself To Be God?
It is difficult for us to see this if only seeing by our physical eyes and not using our spiritual eyes God has given us. Why didn't our Lord, God, and Savior just come right out and say so? Why didn't Jesus just come straight out and declare to the entire world, “I am God, I am your Creator. I am the One you been looking for!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before
Abraham was born, I am!”
It takes spiritual eyes to see God’s revelation. It is
impossible to see it with our physical eyes. We need the
Old Testament revelation in order to unlock the revelation
of God found in the New Testament. The entire Bible is
like a fine tapestry (a heavy cloth with pictures woven into
it). The word of God from start to finish is a painting of
God’s revelation to mankind.
Now let us unlock the picture God is painting when He
uses this name for Himself: “the Son of Man” Jesus
used this term for Himself over eighty times in the New
Testament. To see what He revealed about Himself
every time he referred Himself as “the Son of Man” we
need to look in the Old Testament to find the answer.
But first a warning by Jesus Himself:
8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written,
“You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him only shall you serve.”
Jesus is declaring only God is to be worshiped and only
Him shall we serve.
Now we shall see the tapestry surrounding the Lord’s
preferred name, “Son Of Man”, and why He used it.
Jesus knew it revealed who He was as it is written in
scripture. He knew the Pharisees and Sadducees
would not see what it revealed for they lacked the
spiritual eyes to see. (Read Mark 8: 11-18)
The first time the title, “son of man”, was seen in
scripture was written by the prophet Daniel.
13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the
son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came
to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near
14 And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a
kingdom, that all people, nations, and
languages, should serve him: his dominion is an
everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and
his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
This vision of Daniel is declaring that the son of man is
Deity. THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD! Every time Jesus
called Himself “Son of Man”, He was revealing
Himself as God.
Mark 14:61b - 62
Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah,
the Son of the Blessed One?”
62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man
sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on
the clouds of heaven.”
WOW! Jesus is declaring Himself as God
(I AM). He is to be worshiped and served and as it is
written....only God is given that honor.
In the book, “Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus”, author
Nabeel Qereshi, wrote that even before he converted
from Islam to Christianity, he found that indeed the Bible
in the book of Daniel chapter 7, along with Psalm 110,
was declaring that the son of man was deity. As he
struggled with the question of Jesus true
identity he wrote:
“Would it be worth it to pick up my cross and be crucified
next to Jesus? If He is not God, then NO. Lose
everything I love to worship a false god? A million times
over, NO! But if He is God, then YES.
A million time over, YES!”
Nabeel came to the conclusion, after many years of
struggling with the question of who Jesus was,
that indeed Jesus is God. He lost all that he loved to follow Him.”
My questions to you now is this:
Who will you worship? Who will you serve? Who will
you bow your knee to and confess is Lord?
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,10
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every
tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
glory of God the Father.
I choose to worship my Lord, my God, and my Savior
Jesus Christ. It is my prayer you do too.
God loves you and so do I!
